Harley Street Health District podcast dives into the story behind the ‘world’s largest medical and life sciences area’ to kick off its global health innovation hub conversations.
Texas Medical Center (TMC) owes its success as a leading global health improvement and innovation ecosystem to a cultural emphasis on breaking down silos, according to a medical innovation leader based there.
Professor Jenny Shand, host of the Harley Street Health District podcast ‘In Conversation’, met with Homer Quintana, Director of the TMC-based Centre for Rapid Device Translation at hospital and academic research group Houston Methodist.
The second episode of the In Conversation podcast puts international health innovation districts under the microscope. Quintana said TMC’s longstanding legacy of innovation in medical devices has meant that the 60+ organisations in its health district have access to tried and tested pathways including prototyping, clinical validation and commercialisation.
TMC, which saw its first hospital open over 100 years ago in 1925, describes itself as ‘the largest medical complex in the world’ at ‘the forefront of advancing life sciences.’
The area is home to nearly 10,000 patient beds over an area spanning more than 50m ‘developed square feet’, with over 120k staff working across the medical and life sciences organisations, according to the latest TMC data.
In recent years, the US medical ecosystem has established international digital health collaboration agreements dubbed ‘BioBridges’ with various countries, including the UK, designed to support startups looking to expand into the US market.
Quintana said networking opportunities across the TMC are crucial to its ongoing growth, encouraging “innovation collisions….. where you have someone that shows up with this great idea or a technology that needs input from someone that lives in that scenario every day, sees that same problem that you are pointing a solution towards and says: ‘I want to be a part of that journey’, and has an understanding of how to go from idea all the way into the clinic”.
Professor Shand’s interview with Quintana is available to watch and listen to on the Harley Street Health District YouTube and Spotify channels. Episodes published monthly to spotlight fellow US areas Boston and Nashville, and EU hubs based in Amsterdam and Barcelona.
The conversations intentionally explore how fellow health districts drive collaboration to maximise impact, advance innovation and research, and strengthen care across the full pathway – from prevention through to long-term management.
