Harley Street physios win praise for ACL research

Two specialist sports physiotherapists from the Isokinetic London sports medicine clinic in the Harley Street Health District have received praise for their research into anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries at this year’s Isokinetic Football Conference. Selected from hundreds of case reports, the two presentations were judged outstanding by an international panel of sports medicine doctors.

Alessandro Compagnin was awarded first prize for a research paper that explores the challenges and outcomes of athletes returning to sports after suffering multiple ACL injuries and undergoing bilateral reconstructions. His study highlights the intricate rehabilitation processes required for athletes to regain sufficient knee strength, stability and functional performance. Compagnin emphasises the importance of comprehensive strength assessments, functional tests and psychological readiness evaluations to ensure a safe and effective return to play. This research contributes to improving rehabilitation strategies and protocols for athletes with complex ACL injury histories.

Awarded third prize at the conference, Filippo Picinini’s research paper explores the potential for ACL injuries to heal without surgical intervention. The study involved clinical and MRI assessments of patients with complete ACL ruptures who underwent conservative treatment. Results indicated that a subset of these patients experienced spontaneous healing, demonstrated by restored ligament continuity on MRI and favourable clinical outcomes. The research challenges the prevailing belief that ACL ruptures cannot heal naturally, suggesting that non-surgical management may be viable for some individuals.
