MHIN #14: Safe enough? Building trust in AI for Mental Health
This event is no longer available
From private chatbot use to regulated care: what evidence, safeguards and accountability does the UK system need to understand, challenge and agree?
The purpose of this event is to help stakeholders develop a shared, practice-level understanding of:
- What “safe” and “evidence‑based” actually mean when applied to AI in mental health
- Where AI is and is not appropriate in the care pathway
- What trust and accountability look like in practice across the entire citizen‑facing AI ecosystem
- How the UK can create conditions that are both safe for the public and conducive to responsible innovation
It will also confront a live moral question that many in the system are already grappling with: when, if ever, is it acceptable for AI to act as a therapeutic intervention in its own right, and what would have to be true for that to be safe enough?
MHIN’s 14th meetup brings together the mental health innovation ecosystem to have an honest, grounded conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) – not as an emerging technology to be introduced, but as something already in the room. Millions of people in the UK are already using AI for mental health support, often through tools never designed for that purpose, and a growing body of evidence now sits alongside growing documented harm and early signs that some uses can improve safety and access when done well.
Attendees will receive a pre‑read covering the key categories of AI in use, the current evidence base, and the live debates, so that everyone arrives with a common baseline and the room can focus on the harder questions.
